Franck LOUIS-MARIE
Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Life Long Martial Artist
Franck, born in Paris, France, began his martial arts journey in 1976 alongside his older brothers. He joined a local Judo after-school program led by Sensei Guy Pelletier, the 7th black belt in French Judo history. After eight years, Franck transitioned to striking martial arts, exploring disciplines such as Kun Tao, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Kali, and Jeet Kune Do for approximately five years. In his quest for a more realistic fighting art, he enrolled in Thai Boxing at the renowned Belloni Gym, where he had the opportunity to train under Thep Maisondeth from Thailand.
Being a multidisciplinary artist, Franck also pursued a journey as a bass player. However, a turning point came when one of his bandmates mentioned a Brazilian family that went by the name of Gracie, renowned for their mastery in Jiu-Jitsu. This discovery occurred during the early days of the UFC, sparking Franck's interest. However, it was witnessing the first UFC with Royce Gracie's remarkable feats that left Franck in shock, sparking an obsession with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. It intrigued him to see, for the first time, a form of Judo adapted to a no-holds-barred rule set.
In 1995, a significant milestone arrived when Rickson Gracie conducted a one-week seminar in Paris. Experiencing Rickson's brilliance firsthand during the seminar, being submitted alongside 30 other participants, left an indelible impression of the precision and power of Jiu-Jitsu techniques.
Returning to Judo, Franck focused on Ne Waza under Sensei Guy Chopelin, allowing him to combine Judo with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He later delved into Kendo, achieving the rank of Ni dan after five years of dedicated study.
In 2005, Franck relocated with his family to Los Angeles, reigniting his Jiu-Jitsu journey at the Rickson Gracie Academy under the guidance of instructors like Shane Rice, Henry Akins, Kevin Casey, Curtis Vega, and Kron Gracie, who promoted Franck to a blue belt in 2008.
Expanding his horizons, Franck joined Cobrinha’s school in 2010, where he was promoted to the rank of Purple belt in 2012. In 2014, he joined the Gracie Academy under the teaching of Rener and Ryron Gracie, achieving a brown belt and becoming certified as a combatives instructor Level 1. Franck spent several years teaching, initially from his garage in Marina del Rey and later at the House of Champion in Van Nuys, for about three years.
Transitioning to 5 Stars Martial Arts under the leadership of Professor Shawn Williams, he earned his Black belt in 2019. The advent of the Covid pandemic significantly impacted the Jiu-Jitsu landscape. Despite the challenges, Franck persevered, maintaining training outdoors or in pods. In 2021, Franck and his spouse Tracy relocated to Grand Junction, Colorado, while their two young adult kids remained in California. Currently, Franck teaches at Grand Valley Jiu-Jitsu / GFTeam under the tutelage of Kevin L Lewis, who promoted him to the rank of 1st-degree black belt.
In early 2023, Franck initiated the creation of AVANT GUARD JIU-JITSU, an online course hosted under Avant Guard.TV. His limitless passion for teaching, coupled with his empathy towards beginners in Jiu-Jitsu, has earned him tremendous appreciation from peers and students within the Jiu-Jitsu community.
